  • Comparison of business performance of the Top 1000 World Banks and banks in Korea

According to The Banker, the business performance of the Top 1000 world banks in terms of Tier 1 capital size during 2008 is mainly characterized by a drastic downturn in profitability and an increase in the Tier 1 capital facing the global credit crisis. The profitability of the Top 20 world banks worsened even more drastically recording a 301 billion dollar profit in 2007 and a 32 billion dollar loss in 2008. Despite the deterioration in profitability, Tier 1 capital increased from 3,899 billion to 4,276 billion dollars, whilst the capital-to-asset ratio showed a moderate increase of 0.11%p between 2007 and 2008 thanks to the massive bailout programs by governments and recapitalization efforts by banks themselves.

Banks in Korea performed better during 2008 in terms of profitability and capital adequacy ratios, compared with the Top 1000 world banks, recording an ROE before tax of 11.08% and an ROA before tax of 0.58%. Tier 1 capital of banks in Korea also increased by 11.4% between 2007 and 2008. However, their capital-to-asset ratio fell slightly in 2008. For more information, please refer to attached file.
